Nigerian rappers in supremacy battle...

Nigerian rappers Sauce kid, Ice Prince, Modenine, M.I, IBK Spaceship Boi, Naeto C, X.O Senavoe on the set of the Naija BET Cypher 2011.

On September 6, 2013 popular music blog NotjustOk released a ‘10 Most Gifted Rappers in Nigeria‘ list which would spark off a chain of events – the list cited Modenine at the very top followed by Olamide, Phyno, M.I, Sinzu (formerly known as Sauce Kid), ShowDemCamp (SDC), Ice Prince, Vector, Naeto C and Reminisce.

A number of rappers were not pleased with the rap sheet and didn’t mind airing out their thoughts – Terry tha Rapman who was surprisingly excluded from the list, wrote on Twitter, ‘I inspired most of the rappers on that list, do the math‘.

Jesse Jagz who was also missing from the list voiced out his opinion, also faulting it ‘Just ’cause u own a blog doesn’t mean you know anything about music.. Business and the art of hiphop are two different things‘.

US returnee and freestyle king Godwon (one-time winner of Eminem’s freestyle battle in Houston) also questioned the list saying ‘So there’s a top ten list and I’m not there? #GTFOH’, adding ‘Banky is a better rapper than at least 3 niggas on that list, this is not controversial, its bullshit!‘.
And more comments poured in from not just Hip-Hop enthusiasts but just about everybody, most of them faulting the list, giving an opinion as to who should and not be included. Others were upset with the ranking, expecting their favourite rappers to closer to the top spot.

WHY ALL THE DRAMA?
Hip-Hop music is likened to the sport of boxing, there must always be one champ in the ring, if you want a shot at the title, you’ll have to fight for it; from time to time, an MC (what a rapper is also called) comes from the nooks to test the champ, he either wins, loses or in rare cases pulls a draw.

The thing is Hip-Hop music in Nigeria has been generally conceived as a less viable genre of Nigerian music – in fact the, Hip-Hop music falls in fifth place to more favourable genres like Pop, Highlife, Fuji and RnB. Nevertheless, Hip-Hop music or Rap music has played a vital role in the Nigerian music industry in the last 14 years and even a bigger one right about now as rappers battle for the top spot.

Similar to the Western region where the culture/music was birthed, there seems to be two states of Rap music where its apostles lie – the underground and commercial state. Nigerian fans have one time or the other witnessed a clash of these sides; whether it was Ruggedman going off on Eedris Abdulkareem in 2003 or Freestyle and eLDee da Don in 2007 or Modenine and Ruggedman in 2008.

MODENINE REMAINS KING
For a long time, Modenine has been considered an unmistakable legend of rap music in Nigeria with quite a lot of instances to proves him worthy of the throne – defeating friend-turned-foe Ruggedman in a prolonged ‘beef’, playing down Sinzu and Ghetto P‘s jabs, throwing former-rapper-turned-OPA K-Show to the curb, surviving M.I‘s intrusion into the Hip-Hop game and throughout the period, winning the ‘Lyricist on the Roll‘ award (six times in a roll). There however has been no hierarchy after Modenine’s position, making the rap game an open battle field for the others who are desperate to claim the nearest top position.

THE ROYAL RUMBLE
So it seemed like NotjustOk’s rap sheet was just the right elixir to spur every rapper and their mama to claim their position. After Terry, Jesse Jagz and Godwon’s outburst on Twitter, eLDee’s Trybe Records protégé Rukus verbally assaulted Naeto C, M.I, Vector and Ice Prince then Godwon and Sinzu released multiple diss songs at each other, dragging their baby mamas and kids into the beef, Naeto C released a subliminal at Rukus, Ice Prince spat back on Twitter. Right before the list was published, Vector and Yung6ix took claim to the throne, individually stating they are the best in Nigeria. Before now the scene had been quite silent, with every rapper trying to score a hit like Wizkid.

BEEF IS GOOD
It’s quite surprising that things have quickly heated up in the Hip-Hop community in 2013, following the poor run in 2012 where only four Hip-Hop albums were released into the market; surprisingly all indigenous albums – Jhybo‘s ‘Be Naa Ni‘, Reminisce‘s ‘Book of Rap Stories‘, Illbliss‘ ‘Oga Boss and Olamide‘s ‘YBNL‘.

Modenine and Jesse Jagz are the only two MCs to have released albums so far in 2013 but with upcoming releases from Ice Prince (Fire of Zamani), M.I (Chairman), Reminisce (Alaga Ibile), Olamide (Take it Outside), Yung6ix (6ix O’Clock), Terry tha Rapman, Phero and Overdose (BANS), 2Shotz (B.O.S.S), the last quarter of the year will be explosive just like it was in 2010 (over to 10 rap albums were released then).

The recent controversy just serves as a perfect platform to re-introduce the genre which is steadily becoming more appealing to the Nigerian listeners.

Photo of Stella Damasus and younger actress causes controversy...

Stella Damasus instagrammed this photo of herself and this young actress.

The actress who’s currently in New York posted the photo a while ago with the caption ‘So proud of you my princess. The fastest rising movie star‘. A few hours later, she’s questioning why everyone thinks the younger lady is her daughter.

This photo has caused a lot of mayhem in the social media and I am loving it. The world will soon see how silly and gullible SOME of these writers and bloggers can be. Coming soon‘, Stella re-upped on her Instagram.

Two things we quickly learnt:

1. The young actress starred along with Damasus in the upcoming web series ‘Mix Match’ produced and directed by husband lover business partner Daniel Ademinokan.

2. Stella Damasus seems to feed off controversy like her life depends on it…

In a bid to raise the number of people who attend home games, a football club in Switzerland FC Luzern is employing strippers to entertain the crowd during the half time break.

NET gathered the idea was raised by the club owner Bernard Alpstaeg who wants the ladies to remove their clothes and dance before the match and during half time.
`
‘We are doing well this season and we have a great team, but we want to be even more attractive. I want a show before kick-off. I want scantily clad strippers and sexy dancers to entertain fans before the game. The stadium would be full – that’s guaranteed!’ said the club owner.

The proposal has been sent to the Swiss FA to get their final clearance.

Amy Winehouse biopic will ‘never’ happen...

Amy Winehouse. Photo: Bangshowbiz

Amy Winehouse‘s parents Mitch and Janice Winehouse insist they will never allow a biopic of her life to be made.

Mitch and Janice Winehouse – who are separated – would not be comfortable to see their late daughter’s life story told on the big screen and would not sanction a film.

Janice insists she wouldn’t feel comfortable seeing a Hollywood actress portray Amy – who tragically died from alcohol intoxication at her home in Camden, north London, in July 2011 at the age of 27 – but she and Mitch were happy to be involved in the upcoming documentary made by ‘Senna‘ director Asif Kapadia.

When asked if she would allow a film about Amy’s life to be made, Janice told Bang Showbiz: ‘No you couldn’t, oh no. You cannot have somebody else portraying her. We were actually called in and we were talking about things so there will be voices from family and friends talking about her [in the documentary] but you can’t have someone playing Amy the character. There is only one Amy.’

Mitch – who wrote his own 2012 autobiography ‘ Amy: My Daughter’ – added: ‘As far as a film is concerned there will never be a biopic, because they are all the same. Johnny Cash, Ray Charles you pick them up and put Amy in it’s exactly the same story. Everyone is bored with that stuff.’
Mitch set up the Amy Winehouse Foundation in memory of his daughter to help homeless youngsters and people struggling with substance abuse problems.

A month’s worth of events are taking in place in September to remember the ‘Back to Black’ singer entitled #Amys30 to mark what would have been her 30th birthday on September 14. The #Amys30 events will be happening throughout September in and around Camden, including music nights, pool tournaments, a walking tour of Amy’s Camden, a vintage fair and a Pop Up Shop at Camden Collective – all in aid of the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

For information and tickets, go to Amywinehousefoundation.org

Tonight Friday September 13, 2013, stars including Channel 4 news reader Jon Snow, Mica Paris and David McAlmont will sing in honour of Amy at a karaoke-style event being held at the Gilgamesh restaurant and bar.

Read New York Times’ review of D’banj ‘D’ King’s Men’ album...

D'banj D'kings Men Album art. Photo:Jaguda

D’banj is one of the great African pop stars of the past decade, a charming singer but, more important, a savvy showman.

For years, this Nigerian singer was at the center of the Mo’Hits Records stable, but now he’s struck out on his own with a new label and the compilation ‘D’Banj Presents DKM (D’ King’s Men)‘ (DB/G.O.O.D./Sony).

It’s an alluring contemporary pop album with an emphasis on king-size dance music, like the militarily efficient ‘Don’t Tell Me Nonsense‘ and the flash of last year’s excellent smash hit ‘Oliver Twist’.

D’banj is also a savvy synthesizer of the old and new Africa, as on ‘Nous les Meilleurs (We the Best),’ a duet with the Congolese singer Fally Ipupa. But really, D’banj has his eye on the world; he’s signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint, and the lovely ‘Scape Goat (The Fix)‘ features what’s certainly the most cheerful version of Mr. West you’ll hear this year, or any year.

AFCRC Calls On USA And The United Nations To Be Cautious In Syria...

Click for Full Image SizeAfrican Cultural and Fundamental Rights Council (AFCRC) USA calls on President Obama, the Congress and people of the United States of America, the international community, specifically United Nations (UN) to be cautious and meticulous in dealing with the allegations of the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime in Syria. America and the world should be mindful so as not to repeating the mess caused by faulty and frivolous, completely baseless intelligence and illegal attacks on Iraq during the George W. Bush era. Obviously, that ghost has continue to hunt America and the world.

Although AFCRC believes any government which attempts or commits genocide and other crimes against humanity, including the use of chemical or biological weapons against its own people lost not only its right to protect the people as mandated under the United Nations norm: States Responsibility to Protect (R2P) against genocide, etc., but also lost its claim to the nonintervention rules of international law. We call for the truth about who used these weapons in Syria to justify the international community's Responsibility to Protect, where the state has failed as in Syria's situation.

No group, whether rebels or otherwise reserves the right or prerogative to use these weapon against a government and people. Rebels and government or individuals found to be involved in the use of such weapons must be held accountable. Such accountability should come only after a thorough investigation, analysis, tests of different shades that would allay doubts have been carried out to know the true and undeniable source (s) of use.

So far it's obvious based on the stories, claims and count-claims and images from Syria that chemical weapons have been used repeatedly. While the government of Syria is claiming rebels are responsible for the use of these weapons the rebels and reported independent sources including American intelligence are saying it's the government's action.

America has come up with its positions pointing to Assad's government as the culpable party due to reported tests and analysis done, capabilities and delivery systems of a deadly organophosphorus compound or chemical such as Sarin. Yet, some aren't convinced considering counter-claims and the experiences from faulty intelligence in Iraq, etc. Care has to be taken therefore, to avoid regrets, blames, more animosity and all that.

We believe that the killing of more than 100, 000 people as indicated in Syria, and mostly innocent civilians by an unpopular government should have been confronted and stopped in the most strongest terms by the international community and all UN Member-States. We also know that most UN-Member States will not and can't lead severe investigation, actions or reportedly deterrent attacks envisaged in Syria. United States has been that one country with such leverage, capability and heart despite its errors at certain points, its loses in human and financial resources and incurred hatred, to lead and engage such situations.

Therefore, we don't expect any miracle in leadership from other countries or groups in this direction, yet demand that the international community, UN-Member States join forces with America in investigating and gathering factual evidence and actually punishing and holding culprits of this heinous and crimes against humanity to account. A collective resolve, investigation and action will not only send a strong message to Assad and whoever the culprits might be, that the world is united against the use of such nerve agent and crimes.

It will also serve to destroy stockpiles and capabilities of the users, thus send stronger message and warning to would-be chemical weapons developers and users around the world, that the world has no place for such deadly weapons, even though going nuclear for positive domestic uses may be allowed.

We believe crimes against humanity and genocide must not be interpreted as when 500, 000 to 1,000.000 people are massacred by a government. Once an unpopular government or ruler, dictator consciously wage war and targeting his or her people; those seeking freedom and justice, defenseless citizens who aren't combatants in particular and even combatant who also have rights under international humanitarian law.

The international community reserves the right, responsibility and duty to act in the defense of the defenseless. Such action is appropriate under the international Responsibility to Protect (R2P) norm and relative to acts of war crimes, ethnic cleansing, genocide and other crimes against humanity.

The world must not wait for chemical and biological weapons to be used to start assuming its responsibility to act. It should rather act decisively to prevent the use of chemical weapons and genocide. What is United Nations for, if more than 100, 000 people can be killed and it sits to watch; why must it be structured in a way that one or two countries, Russia and China for example can use their veto power to stop collective action against tyranny while politics is played with human lives?

AFCRC believes human rights aren't only about peacefully seeking freedom, equality and justice while the seekers are being ignored mostly and killed by oppressive, totalitarian or dictatorial regimes which include some wearing the mask of democracy. Human rights also includes the right or ability to protect oneself or group, nation and particularly the application of self defense where lives are believed to be in danger or threatened. In the Syrian situation the defenseless and innocent civilians have such right but lacks the ability or means to protect and defend themselves.

Therefore the urgent need for the international community led by America which has for long assumed such responsibility to step in and protect the defenseless for the sake of our common humanity and dignity to lives, while seeking political solutions based upon popular will to the existing problem in Syria and stay consistent in dealing with similar crisis around the world.

Kim Kardashian has expressed her desire to pose for a ‘nude’ Playboy photo shoot now she has given birth to her and Kanye West‘s daughter North West.

The reality TV star has expressed her desire to do a ‘nude shoot’ for the men’s magazine after she gave birth to her daughter North West – her first child with partner Kanye West – on June 15. She made the revelation in scenes filmed for the upcoming series of ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ – and has admitted she would like to take part in another risque photo shoot.

Speaking before her baby’s birth, she said: ‘As soon as I pop this thing out, I want to do Playboy or some nude shoot.‘ Kim – who posed for the magazine in 2007 – previously blasted the publication for posting the photographs online in 2010, once she became famous. However, she has also claimed her decision to appear in Playboy was to cement her ‘independence’.

She previously explained: ‘It was an independence thing for me. I was always by the book, such the straight arrow when it came to pleasing my parents and being a good daughter. ’I felt like this was one decision that only I could make. And I think it looks great. I’ll have those pictures forever.’
