Reps stop liquidation of NITEL, MTel...

The House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to halt the on-going liquidation process of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) and its mobile division, Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTel).

The legislators rather called for an immediate technical and financial audit of the ailing company. The lawmakers are also pushing for a Public Private Partnership (PPP) alternative to outright liquidation of the two telecommunication companies.

The decision of the lawmakers followed the approval of the recommendations of the report of House Committees on Privatisation and Commercialisation, Finance, Communications, Public Procurement and Information Technology on the need to stop the liquidation process.

Presidency chooses 14 States to kick-start Mortgage Refinance Company...

The federal government had selected 14 states for the pilot phase of the proposed Mortgage Refinancing Company (MRC).

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Thursday disclosed this in a lecture tagged: 'A Century of the Nigerian Private Sector,' organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Lagos.

Okonjo-Iweala stressed the need for a functional mortgage system, saying that by the end of November, President Goodluck Jonathan would launch the MRC.

NIPP: Jonathan commissions Geregu power station in Kogi...

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday commissioned the 434MWs Geregu 2 Power Station, which is the first of a series of commissioning ceremonies scheduled for other plants under the National Integrated Power Plants (NIPP).

At the ceremony in Kogi, President Jonathan assured that the event is bringing to a gradual end some of the many problems that had plagued the NIPP in the past, and assured the commissioning of the NIPP plants before first quarter of next year.

The 500MWs power plant at Omotosho is next on the fleet of plants for commissioning.

Gov. Obi Hands Over Cars To State Judicial Officers...

Awka: Gov. Peter Obi today handed over 58 vehicles for the state judicial officers in the Magistrate and Court Registrar cadre to Anambra Chief Judge Hon. PNC Umeadi. He said the gesture was in fulfillment of his promise to the judiciary and noted that this was the third time his administration was providing vehicle for magistrates in nearly eight years.

Anambra State Attorney-General Hon. Peter Afuba said the governor's gesture was in acknowledgement of the state judiciary's diligence and salutary and proactive role in delivering justice to the common man and those at the poverty level. He applauded the role of the judiciary in enhancing the MDG goal of poverty alleviation by making sure that even the indigent in the state were assured of expeditious and affordable justice. He also acknowledged the role of the judiciary in improving the state's internally generated revenue (IGR).

Ngige Is Deficit In Character...

The Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Peter Obi on media and Publicity has advised Dr. Chris Ngige to do away with what he called “propensity for Mischief”, he was reacting to a publication on a front page of a National Newspaper, showing the picture of a man described as Chinedu, a photographer with Chris Ngige's Campaign Organization.

Obienyem advised Ngige to concentrate with his campaigns than cooking up stories to attract the sympathy of the people to himself. “If I were Ngige, I would concentrate on convincing the people that I will not visit Okija Shrine again; that I will not turn the State into a battle field; and that I will not only work on roads only, but that I will take development to all the parts of the State, rather than engaging in acts geared towards attracting the sympathy of the people.”

Don't Misinterpret Supreme Court's Decision—PDP Tells Amaechi...

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has called on the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi not to drag the Supreme Court into politics by misinterpreting it's decision on matters before it.

According to the party, Amaechi's interpretation and information on the October 3 decision of the Supreme Court concerning the governorship of Rivers State does not reflect the true position of the highest Court in the land.

"Governor Amaechi and his overzealous supporters have deliberately twisted the Supreme Court's ruling on the various applications before it in the Rivers State matter to suit them and thereby misinformed their innocent supporters and the unsuspecting public" the party said.

The Director of Grassroots Sports Development at the National Sports Commission (NSC) has predicted brighter future for Nigeria sports if the programmes being put in place to develop ports at the grassroots are implemented consistently.

He disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja during this month's Federation of Public Service Games (FEPSGA) 'Keep Fit Walking and Jogging Exercise organized to commemorate Nigeria's 53rd Independence anniversary.

'If we are going by the key performance indicators of the National Sports Commission which is about mass participation in sports, then you can say we have done very well but, if you are looking at medal level at the international scene, then I will say that the graph has been undulating.

A chartered aircraft conveying the body of the former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu this morning crashed shortly after take-off at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.

Sources on ground said one of his sons was involved in the crash alongside the Commissioner for Tourism in Ondo State who had been detailed to accompany the corpse from Lagos.

Agagu's casket remained intact, but failed to open after all efforts by the rescue teams. It has now been moved to the Air Force Base close to the airport.

It was gathered that the body of the former governor had been recovered, could not, however, ascertain the state of the corpse or that of the casket.

Much Ado About Friends With Benefits...

My mind just drifts off every now and then and I find myself ruminating on various situations and phenomenon that I find quite intriguing(these things could also include money, alcohol, women, and the almighty academics, but what can I say, it’s a hardknock life but YOLO mehn!) and then I stumble on this movie that featured Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis titled Friends With Benefits and I also remember I watched the other one that carries on the same theme, No Strings Attached which featured Ashton Kutcher and one other chick like this (can’t really remember her name again) and one thing struck me-the recurring theme of FWB-ism that seems to be quite the practice these days. The first time I heard the term Friends With Benefits was in that serial called One Tree Hill, if you haven’t watched it, it’s one long boring sob tale of a group of people who fall in love, fall out of it, cheat on one another, concoct scandals and bamboozle you with moral lessons that are meant to get you thinking about your life!*sigh*I know right? That serial spanned nine seasons! I stopped at the sixth season mehn. It started feeling like I was watching a reality show very much like that IQ dropping one called Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Sweardown that show will make you dumb, you can ask Banky W, he’ll tell you the same thing!

Lagos, BRT operator launch 50 buses to ease pains of 'Molue' ban...

In a bid to improve the commuting experience of residents in Lagos State due to the ban on Molue buses from plying the Island routes, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority LAMATA, in collaboration with the operator of Bus Rapid Transit BRT, has launched 50 new buses to beef up the existing fleet along Mile 12 to CMS route.

According to Managing Director of LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, the operator of the BRT system, First BRT Cooperative, had ordered 50 new buses, 40 of which had arrived and been deployed into operation, as part of a holistic plan at returning the BRT operations and experience to its once efficient and effective state at launch in 2008.

Governor Suntai seeks out-of-court settlement to end Taraba crisis...

Hopes for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Taraba State got a boost on Monday as Governor Danbaba Suntai, at a Jalingo High Court, filed an application for an out-of-court settlement in an action in which he challenged the state House of Assembly's decision to reject his letter of resumption to duty, after returning from a medical treatment abroad.

The presiding judge, Justice Ali Andenyatso, adjourned the case to October 28, for further hearing or for the court to receive the outcome of the out-of-the-court settlement.

Counsel to Suntai, Elijah Nyaro, who stood in for Mr. Alex Iziyon (SAN), filed an oral application seeking a three-week adjournment to enable the parties to reach an out-of-court settlement.

APC Accuses PDP Of Plot To Rig 2015 Elections...

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said it has uncovered a plot by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Presidency to rig the 2015 general elections and to destabilize Nigeria.

A statement by its interim national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the strategy being employed by the PDP and the Presidency to win the 2015 elections, include suppression of votes in areas where the President's chances are slim, using the police and the military.

APC said the PDP also plans to use what it tagged a 'Third Force' to bamboozle Nigerians to project the image of a performing Presidency even when the ruling party admits that the current public perception of its government is less than salutary.

Atiku Condemns Attempt To Criminalise Dissent...

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the silence of the government over the rumors and threats of certain members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) being picked and detained for no identifiable crime against the country or anybody.

In a statement by his media office in Abuja, the former Vice President said the PDP crisis is an internal family disagreement, which should not give anybody the right to arrest those who are express dissenting voice.

He said 'criminalizing legitimate dissent over internal disagreements could lead Nigeria into a police state and thereby, defeat all the basic features of the democratic system,'  stressing that people should not lose freedom for expressing contrary opinion.

What is your own assessment of Nigeria at 53?
For a country composed the way Nigeria is as a multi-ethnic, multi religious, country with a climate that spreads from the swampy forest from the south to the desert climate in the north and the inherent complexity, I think as a nation we have done well. If you look at the context of our broken phases in leadership, changes in leadership, tribal, regional conflict and all that. I think we have done well to be quite honest. I think sometimes, we under assess ourselves or we underrate what we have achieved. But some of the recent happenings in the world show us that we done well as a nation. So for me, I think Nigeria has done well and my prayer is that the democratic experiment that started 14 years ago should be sustained so that we continue to move steadily towards full development.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had on Friday had asked the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to delete the name of the former secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola from their records and be replaced with Professor Wale Oladipo.

CBN bans importation of foreign currency...

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has banned the importation of all foreign currencies except with its approval.

This was contained in a statement signed by CBN Director of Corporate Communications, Mr Ugo Okoroafor, on Tuesday in Abuja.

It said that the move was sequel to the Bank's withdrawal of the operating licence of 20 Bureaux de Change (BDCs).

The CBN alleged that the BDCs purchased and sold huge sums of U.S. dollars with no documentation to show details of the transactions.

President Goodluck Jonathan, in his Independence Day broadcast on Tuesday, approved the holding of a National Dialogue/Conference.

A statement on Tuesday night in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, said the President has also approved the membership and terms of reference of the Federal Government's Advisory Committee on the Conference.

Jonathan named a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, as one of the 13 members of the committee headed by Senator Femi Okurounmu.

N144m Halts NFF Relocation...

NFF General Secretary Musa Amadu says the federation cannot move into its recently-commissioned headquarters because of a cash crunch.

Soon after the Sunday Dankaro House was commissioned, KickOffNigeria.com reported that the NFF would be unable to move in owing to its cash constraints.

On Sunday, Amadu confirmed it to members of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports.

In the 'Best Actor in a Leading Role in an English Movie category, the likes of Bloosom  Chukwujekwu, Seun Akindele, Bayo Alawiye, O.C Ukeje and Funso Adeolu were nominated, while Odunade Adekola, Mike Ezenronye, Richard Aigbor, Muyiwa Ademola and Femi Adebayo made it to the Yoruba Movie section of the same category.
