ASUU Crisis Will Soon End, Minister Assures...

The supervising Minister of Education, Chief (Barr) Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike has assured Nigerians, particularly students of the various affected Universities in Nigeria that the on-going strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon be called off.

The Minister, who was speaking as a Special Guest at an Inauguration and Thanksgiving Service of the Grassroot Development Initiative (GDI) in Khana Local Government Area in Bori, Rivers State, said members of the striking Universities Union will soon return to the classes following a positive ongoing resolution engagement between them and the federal government.

<b>Abia State Government, Governor Theodore Orji</b>

The chief press secretary to the governor, Ugochukwu Emezue has described the relocation of Umuahia main market to its permanent site at Ubani which started today 30th sept. as not only historical but a landmark achievement of chief TA Orji's administration.

Mr. Emezue in a statement maintained that what past administrations failed to realize has become a reality due to the governor's political will, determination, sincerity and desire to develop the state in all sectors.

The chief press secretary said that this relocation coming at a time Nigeria is marking its independence is highly significant.

<b>Nigeria At 53: Independence Is Yet To Bear Desirable Fruit, Says ARG</b>

Afenifere Renewal Group has said opinions will forever be divided on whether or not the Independence Day is worth celebrating until the country is restructured in line with true federalism principles, noting that it is a shame that many citizens are not so upbeat about the celebration because the nation offers them no hope.

The group in its Independence Day message signed by its publicity secretary, Kunle Famoriyo, said the nation "can indeed be thankful that the past 53 years of independent nationhood has been a lesson on how not to be a nation, if only we are ready to embrace the future which lies only in purposeful governance. The readiness to obey this lesson is what we should celebrate; not Independence, which is yet to bear the expected fruit of peace, progress, and prosperity."

<b>Emeka Onwuka steps down as Chairman of Enterprise Bank</b>

The Chairman of Enterprise Bank Ltd, Mr Emeka Onwuka has stepped down from the Board.

A move which financial analysts have hailed for exhibition of professionalism and corporate governance is rare in the industry.

Onwuka had in a letter of resignation addressed to the Managing Director AMCON he referred to his earlier declaration of interest, where intimated the management of his interest with a group of investors who intends to acquire AMCON's shares in the three intervened banks including Enterprise bank ltd.

<b>Lay down your arms, ACF begs Boko Haram</b>

The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has again asked the Boko Haram insurgents to lay down their arms and embrace peace, saying that although the country was experiencing hard times, the situation was not bad enough for some people to lose the will to live in the mistaken belief that it is better to die but not alone.

The ACF made this known in its goodwill message to mark the nation's 53 Indepence anniversary.

The statement entitled, 'ACF felicitates with people and government of Nigeria on the occasion of the 53rd Independence,'' and signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the forum, Mr. Anthony Sani reads in part: 'Nigerians have reasons to celebrate because the Independence gives freedom for Nigeria to take its destiny into its hands by determining the content, shape, direction and pace of its socio economic development needed for national solidarity and welfare of all.

WASHINGTON, September 30, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The World Bank Board of Directors today approved an IDA* credit of $US40 million to support Senegal's efforts toboost the productivity of rice, mangoes, and other crops, create jobs for youth and female farmers and rehabilitate roads that linkisolated rural communities with markets in the country's war-torn Casamance region.

<b>2015: New PDP, APC in secret agreement</b>

The Group of Seven Governors who broke away from the Peoples Democratic Party to form a splinter group called New PDP has reached a secret agreement with the opposition All Progressives Congress on the 2015 election.

Though the seven governors had been talking with the APC leaders for sometime, they, however, finally decided to enter into an agreement with the leaders of the opposition coalition after their last reconciliatory meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan.

<b>President says he never said he won't contest 2015 election</b>

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said contrary to reports making the rounds, he had never at anytime promised that he would not contest the 2015 presidential election.

He also denied the claim by Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State that he signed an agreement with some Peoples Democratic Party governors for only one term in office. He challenged anybody with a copy of such agreement to produce it.

Jonathan was fielding questions from a panel of journalists during the Presidential Media Chat in Abuja on Sunday.

He answered questions ranging from politics and education to security, economy and power.

<b>Jonathan meets security chiefs, says 'I'm depressed'</b>

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday had   an emergency meeting with service chiefs over the killing of 50 students of the College of Agriculture in Yobe State.

Jonathan disclosed this while fielding questions during the Presidential Media Chat broadcast live on television stations. He had earlier at the 53rd Independence Anniversary Interdenominational Church Service   at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, admitted that activities of the sect were depressing him and his administration.

He said after meeting with the service chiefs, he directed them to meet and come up with ideas on how to step up the efforts aimed at curbing   the attacks and killings by the insurgents which he described as ' embarrassing.'

The President said, 'Like I said earlier today (Sunday), sometimes one needs a lot of courage to move on. My seat as the President can be very hot and can also be very cold.

'I held a meeting with service chiefs on the killings of students in Yobe State before coming for this media chat. We discussed and resolved that we must do more.

'You will agree with me that incidence of attacks came down after I declared state of emergency in some states but it is coming up again. I have asked the service chiefs to meet again now and see what we can do to stop these embarrassing attacks.'

When asked to respond to allegations that operatives of the State Security Service killed innocent people alleged to be members of   Boko Haram   at the Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja, the President said there was enough reason to believe that those shot were suspected terrorists.

Jonathan, who added that some of those arrested had made confessional statements, said that security agencies had even foiled several plots by insurgents to bomb Abuja this month.

<b>NCAA licenses 26 airlines for flight operations</b>

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has released a list of licensed scheduled commercial and charter airlines in its registry as parts of measures to clamp down on illegal charter airline operations in the country.

In the list released through a public notice on Sunday, the NCAA said only 26 operators had been cleared 'to carry passengers and cargo for a commercial fee.'

The approved airlines include: Aero Contractors Nigeria, Allied Air, Arik Air, Associated Aviation, Atlantic Aviation, Bristow Helicopters, Caverton Helicopters, Chanchangi Airlines and Dana Airlines.

Governors of the South East and South South states declared yesterday in Enugu that the determination of who will be the President of the country in 2015 would be made by the Nigerian electorate, in line with democratic tenets, warning that the power of the people should not be usurped by any group or individuals.

The governors, who met at the Government House, Enugu, in a communique issued at the end of the meeting, also thanked Nigerians for their continued support of President Jonathan's administration and urged the President to remain focussed on governance and not to allow himself to be distracted.

'We note that the determination of who will be President of this country in 2015 will be made by the Nigerian electorate in line with democratic tenets and the power of the people should not be usurped by any group or individuals.

'We call for continued dialogue at resolving national issues and the management of the security situation in the country to guarantee the continued corporate existence of our great nation.

Some days ago, we received intelligence reports that the Presidency was putting finishing touches to what it calls 'Operation Total Crackdown on G7 and their allies in the New PDP'. When we got details of the plot to arrest and commit the leadership of New PDP to prison without charge we thought it was a joke.

The reality, however, dawned on us after we read the interview of our friend and brother, Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, in the PREMIUM TIMES of 26th September, 2013, confirming that President Goodluck Jonathan is under pressure to arrest former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar without any further delay.

The sin of these two distinguished Nigerian statesmen, according to those plotting their 'demystification', is their alleged support for the New PDP, including the G7 Governors. That this evil plot s being conceived by the Presidency confirms that the Abacha days are truly here again with us.

The Lagos State Chapter of PDP has come out very strongly to accuse the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, of high level corruption in governance, stating that the governor ploughs the proceeds therefrom into personal businesses, one of which is the newly commissioned 23 Storey Hotel building which has cost 30billion Naira to complete.

The Party aver that it strongly believes that Governor Fashola has about 60Percent financial contribution in the completion of the 23 Storey, 30Billion Naira worth hotel. " That indeed accounted for why he personally commissioned the Hotel"

The Party states thus that ever than before, it is convinced that the Governor and his Predecessor have indeed plunged the State into unnecessary high debt for their own selfish interests only. "Everyday we hear Lagos State Government collects huge Loans.

Presently the State is indebted to the Tune of over a trillion Naira in Local and Foreign Debts. This is in spite that the State now realises at least 23Billion Naira as IGR every month, yet lagos residents are not enjoying improved cheap social-welfare services. What we see instead, are: New Hotels, Shopping Malls, Airlines, Banks, private Housing Estates, Construction Companies; that are linked to the Governor or his predecessor"

The punishable act took place on July 24, 2013 at about 3: am or the hours of the blue law (a period prohibited by nature for conduct of official government affairs or transaction of its official business).

The Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State unreservedly condemns the threat of strike action by the state leadership of TUC and NLC if the Inspector General of Police does not transfer Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu out of Rivers State within 21 days. We also enjoin on all workers to ignore the said call made by two partisan union leaders who are merely doing their master's bidding.

In their greed, Oruge and Onuegbu could not see the absurdity in gathering 13000 persons in one place just to hand over letters of employment and/or posting in one day. Even the most inexperienced administrator appreciates the impossibility of such a task. Simple mathematics shows that it will take 180 days for each of those 13000 to collect each of their letters using a minimum of 20 minutes per person starting from announcing the name, identification to actual handover of the letter.

A book titled “Baba's Story: Nigeria Is 50″ by a Ghanaian author, Abyna-Ansaa Adjei on ex-Nigerian president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo(aka Baba), is fast-selling at the moment. The 60-page hardcover book, which its foreword was written by Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote, is a story of Obasanjo's origin as told by the ex-president himself. One of the revelations in this book is the relationship between Baba and late Bashorun MKO Abiola which he rarely talks about. Excerpts:

“Moshood Abiola, the billionaire businessman,said he was going to run in the elections. Abiola and I were school mates at the Baptist Boys High School in Abeokuta. He was a year my senior,although we left the school the same year. Kashi, as he was fondly called at school, was editor of our school magazine, The Trumpeter. I was a regular contributor to the magazine and the librarian of the school, a job I had to do to earn some money to pay my way through school.

Amid tight security on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali, 23-year-old Megan Young representing Philippines has been crowned Miss World 2013.

‘I promise to be the best Miss World ever’, Young said as she beat 127 other contestants including Nigeria’s rep, MBGN 2013 winner Anna Banner to win the coveted title today September 28, 2013.

France and Ghana came in second and third position respectively. Nigeria did not reach the top ten final list.

The venue of the pageant was changed following protests by Muslim hardliner groups, Islamic Defenders Front. The sect had asked the government to cancel the pageant because ‘it shows too much skin and goes against Islamic teachings’, AP reports

46-year-old accountant Tolu Kalejaiye’s body was found in her Essex home

A 46-year-old UK based Nigerian accountant Tolu Kalejaiye has been murdered in her £350,000 four-bedroom property in Wickford, Essex.

Kalejaiye’s body was discovered by Police last week and her son has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Mail Online reports that the neighbours said they had been told the mother was stabbed to death, but it was not confirmed how she died.

‘I left my house at just gone 9.30am and when I came back 10 minutes later, there was all this commotion’, Michael Day, 57, her neighbour said. ‘People were running around on the grass outside on their phones and it was all very chaotic. Police cars were quickly on the scene and then the police helicopter was overhead.’

A Port Harcourt based family has won the seventh edition of Maltina Dance All TV show, walking away with the grand prize of N6 million, and a brand new car.

The Briggs family beat four other families Ikumonien, Ibrahim, Enweribe, Ebute at the grand finale which took place at the Convention Centre of Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, after a series of finale performances.

The Enweribe family were the first runners up while the Ebute family emerged second runners up. They got N1m and N500, 000 respectively.

‘I really feel very happy today. It has been God all along. The competition was very challenging because there were other good dancers but by the grace of God, we made it’, Sotom Briggs, the family representative happily said.

Artiste manager Sijuade Adedokun is now a married man.

Popularly called Obasijuade, the Oyo state native and fiancee Ada got hitched on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at a court wedding in Ikeja, Lagos.

Kenyan rapper and ex-big Brother Africa representative, Jackson Makini aka CMB Prezzo might be in big trouble following a recent gun drama with a military man.

The incident which reportedly occurred on the morning of Saturday September 21, 2013 saw the rapper fighting over a parking space outside Aqua Blue Lounge, Nairobi.

According to a statement by Gigiri Division Police boss Vitalis Otieno, Prezzo allegedly obstructed the military colonel (identity withheld) ‘When the military officer came back ready to go, an argument broke out over the parking slot which degenerated to an assault using a gun. We want him to report at Parklands’

Kate Moss is to team up with her husband, The Kills’ rocker Jamie Hince, to record a song for her 40th birthday.

The 39-year-old supermodel – who turns 40 on January 16, 2014 – is teaming up with her husband Jamie Hince, the guitarist for indie rockers The Kills, for a rock track but she has decided to keep it to her friends and family’s ears only rather than release it as a single.

Ezinne Akudo, 22, the reigning Miss Nigeria 2013 has officially began her reign with a new house, after she organized a house warming party in Lekki. Notable attendees include O.C Ukeje, Bryan Okwara, and a host of others, with the wine and laughter in full supply.

As "American Idol" begins its 13th season with a new judges' panel, new producers and a whole new slew of hopefuls, the show's business practices are under scrutiny as a discrimination lawsuit filed by 10 black former contestants continues to wind its way to court.

The plaintiffs, all of whom were disqualified from the show over six seasons for reasons other than singing -- including criminal history -- were recently issued notices of "right to sue" by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, allowing the 429-page lawsuit they filed in July to move forward.
